JUNE 12: SOUTHWESTERN COLORADO

Miles: 302

We toured the towns and ski resorts of Southwestern Colorado through the San Juan National Forest. We drove through Silverton and took the Million Dollar Highway to Ouray, the “Switzerland of America”. The highway has a reputation as one of the most scenic highways in America and it did not disappoint. Telluride is a remote ski resort that was worth the visit. We had some great “Detroit style” pizza at Brown Dog Pizza, which we assume is nothing more than Chicago style pizza made in Detroit... or in this case, Colorado. We finally made it to Cortez and the Mesa Verde National Park to see the Pueblo Indian cliff dwellings. Their planning and construction was amazing, clearly an engineer was involved. I am sure the architect Indian was pushing the Chief for colorful adobe huts in plain view, with no shade or reliable source of water. It was a long day and we got back late.

Colorado is one of the country's most beautiful states and the Southwestern area was amazing. In our visits, we have not found the people of Colorado to be friendly. I would expect folks who largely depend on tourism to at least pretend to be pleasant to them.

Tomorrow we will make our way toward Arizona and the Grand Canyon.
