JULY 2: YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK to CODY WY

Miles: 206

Today we checked out and toured Yellowstone as we left for Cody, WY via the Beartooth Scenic Highway. We traveled back up the Grand Loop Road to Tower Falls. Tower Falls was nice but not as nice as the Upper/Lower Falls we saw yesterday and, unbeknownst to us yet, not even the second best waterfall we would see today. From the falls, we headed East at the Tower-Roosevelt junction through the Lamar Valley and out the Northeast Entrance.

We took the Beartooth Scenic Highway from Yellowstone to Red Lodge, MT and then down to Cody, WY. The highway zigzags across the Wyoming-Montana border. It was said to be the most scenic drive in all of the United States by Charles Kuralt. He might be right; it was beautiful. Minus the wildlife we enjoyed in Yellowstone, this drive might have been nicer than either Yellowstone or the Grand Teton parks. As much as we enjoyed both, I am glad we made this drive afterward so we were not disappointed with the parks. We found two waterfalls and several lakes along the way that we really enjoyed. In the mountains that divide Wyoming and Montana, we picked up a radio station that played nothing but Christmas music. We drove through the mountains listening to Christmas music, the kids played in the snow and it was a sunny 70F in July. One of our best days yet.

When we came down from the mountains, we got ice cream at the Red Box Car in Red Lodge, MT. The drive through farm country to Cody was nice. In Cody, we quickly checked-in, got dinner and desert at Bubba's BBQ and went to the Rodeo. We all enjoyed the rodeo although it did run late.

Today turned out even better than we had planned. Hopefully we have a few more of these days ahead of us.
