JULY 1: YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Miles: 126

We spent most of today exploring the North and East sides of Yellowstone. We drove north from Lake Yellowstone on the Grand Loop Road. We went through Hayden Valley and stopped at Mud Volcano. In the Canyon Area, we stopped at the Upper and Lower Falls and saw the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. We saw the falls from the Artist Point, Upper Falls and Brink of of Lower Falls lookouts. Then we drove over alongside the Yellowstone River and over Mount Washburn, where we saw a significant amount of damage due to forest fires. Along the way we saw herds of Bison and several Black Bears. We continued past the Tower-Roosevelt Area (since we plan to stop there tomorrow) through the Black Tail Plateau and around Mount Everts to Mammoth Hot Springs where we stopped to see the Upper and Lower Terraces. Elk freely walked the streets of the Park Headquarters. We continued to the North Entrance to see the Roosevelt Arch and found some bighorn sheep upon a cliff. We came back to the Roosevelt Corral where we had a Cowboy Dinner. It included a wagon ride to a cookout where the “cowboys” served us a nice dinner. After dinner, we returned to our hotel stopping several times to view wildlife including two Grizzly Bears.

Today turned out to be quite special and by far the best for seeing various animals up close including both Black and Grizzly Bears which are not as commonly seen. The only animal we have not yet seen in Yellowstone is a moose; maybe tomorrow.

  1. Glad you got to see bison that close. That's one of the things you would have seen in Meers, OK.

Did you make sure to not look like a "nerd" at the Engineer Office? Not that you usually do look like one.

    Enjoying the updates and pictures!
